This post is part of a mini-series about money mindset and follows on from the last post explaining what money mindset is.
A lot of people simply don’t recognise that they have an issue with their money mindset, mostly because they just don’t talk about it. I’ve had a few conversations with people recently who said they hadn’t even realised they had a negative mindset or money blocks.
Rather talk about sex than money? You’re not alone! Like Gaby Dunn says, “Sex is cool. Money is very uncool.” According to recent research conducted by Lloyds, 50% of UK adults believed that talking about money was taboo with people saying they would be more confident talking about sex, religion or politics instead of money. This research also showed that 32% of Brits find talking about money stressful with 43% saying it was embarrassing. Do you fall into any of these categories?
With this in mind, I thought I would share some signs that perhaps your money mindset needs shifting…
- You find yourself constantly thinking about or worrying about money
- You feel fear about money
- You feel uncomfortable when thinking or talking about money
- You start to avoid money. Not checking your bank account, not opening letters, not talking about it
- You focus on the negative
- You don’t know where your money goes
- You spend all your money, it “burns a hole in your pocket/purse/wallet”
- You have poor spending habits
- You have got debt
- You spend emotionally. You spend when things are good, when things are bad, when you’re feeling happy, when you’re feeling meh, when you’re feeling down, to celebrate or to commiserate
- You experience feelings of jealousy or envy
- You have negative feelings about money. It may make you want to vomit (as shared by author and journalist, Poorna Bell here)
- You overspend
- You underspend
- You have low prices for your services
- You struggle to talk to clients about money
Now, you may be reading these and thinking “OMG, that’s me!”
Don’t panic, just because these may be your thoughts and feelings now doesn’t mean they will always be this way, you can absolutely shift your mindset. The next post in this series will share some easy wins to help you in shifting into a more positive place but in the meantime, having an awareness of these is absolutely the foundation for improving your mindset.
Now, you might be able to do this on your own but you will be able to make much faster progress with an accountability buddy in the form of a financial coach. It’s my job to hold the mirror up to you, hold your hand while you’re doing the work and cheerlead you along the way. If you’re interested in finding out more about what a financial coach is then here is a post explaining just that and by all means send me an email here. I love to chat! I’m all for opening up money conversations and stopping the topic from being so taboo. I’ve had some great email conversations recently all about money mindset. It’s one of my favourite things to talk about. Otherwise, find me over on Instagram where I share more snippets and again, love to chat!
